Throughout the recruitment of Krys Faber, schools like Minnesota, St. John's, South Florida and others were mentioned, with some of the top programs in college basketball also beginning to take a peek as well, as is the norm in the Spring recruiting period whan a 6'11 big man is available. However, not many were connecting Faber to DePaul. However, after a weekend visit to DePaul last week, Faber came away impressed. Impressed enough to pull the trigger and claim DePaul as his future home for college basketball.
This past season at Ribet Academy, one of the top five provate schools in California, known more for academic achievement than for basketball success, Faber averaged nearly 16 points a game, 17.5 rebounds and 5.5 blocks. As a juniorn the 250 lb big man averaged nearly 13 points a game and 12.5 rebounds. Hopefully he has found a way to improve upon the 32% free throw shooting percentage of his junior season.
Faber joins a class that includes November signees Devin Hill of NYC and the New England Prep School scene and Jeremiah Kelly, a Chicago native who played this past year at American Christian High School.
DePaul currently has two open scholarships as the spring signing period continues. For the most part, they have been linked to other big men recruits such as Teeng Akol, Luka Mirkovic, Steve Goins and Jordan Henriquez, with Mirkovic a strong possibility to still be considered a target at this time. Mirkovic played this past season at La Lumiere School in LaPorte (IN) for former Providence College star Delray Brooks. A very skilled 6'10 forward, Mirkovic offers up size and shooting ability that DePaul could really find useful. Others, such as Louisville, with Brooks' college coach Rick Pitino at the helm, are also intrigued this spring in Mirkovic's potential.
Another possibility for DePaul is to hold the two open scholarships which would give them three available in the 2009 class with their early commitment from Cully Payne of Burlington Central. A couple big men targets such as Aziz N'Diaye and Kyle Rowley of Lake Forest Academy are on their must-see list this spring and they will probably be scouting several high-powered wings this spring, too.
Other resources for DePaul and midwest recruiting news include ChicagoHoops.com and Illinois Prep Bulls-eye who both do a great job covering midwest recruiting and updates often with news from DePaul on the recruiting trail.
